浙江省嵊泗中学的前身为“嵊泗初级中学”，1953年创办于原泗礁第一中心小学内(“羊府宫”旧址)，首任校长由文教科长何秋阳兼任。学校规模极小，只有一个班级，55名学生，3名教师。1954年底，菜园长弄堂新校舍建成，仅有6间平房教室，几间办公室及毛竹搭建的草棚饭厅，徐文达任校长，王槐庭任教导主任。1958年被命名为“舟山第四中学”，开始招收高中学生(共21名)，成为嵊泗第一所完全中学。1960年12月，嵊泗划归上海，学校更名为“上海市嵊泗中学”。
1961年嵊泗又重划归浙江，学校更名为“浙江省嵊泗中学”。 1981年，学校被省教育厅确定为“省重点中学”。1995年，投资1000余万的嵊泗中学新教学大楼在原址落成使用。1998年被省教育厅确认为“省三级重点中学”。2001年被评为省现代教育技术实验学校。2004年2月被确认为浙江省二级重点中学。
学校2003年9月迁入菜园镇东海路50号的新校址，投资7800万元，按省一级重点中学标准建造，占地面积61192平方米,建筑面积27180平方米，绿化面积20121平方米，校园依山傍水，环境优美，设计新颖，布局合理，建在水库之上，现代化气息浓郁。学校现有高中教学班24个，在校生1132名。目前学校的设施尤其在教育信息化、办公条件、体育设施等方面的硬件配置已处于舟山市领先地位。
学校重视师资队伍建设，现有高中专任教师89人，全部具有本科以上学历，其中研究生课程进修结业者为42人，占全体专任教师的47.2% ，学历水平名列舟山市前茅。他们中有全国优秀教师，省劳动模范，省教坛新秀，市级学科带头人等，“名师工程”和“青蓝工程”建设卓有成效，多名青年教师成为市级教学业务尖子。
近年来，学校认真贯彻党和国家的教育方针，坚持以教科研工作为先导、教师专业成长为重点、学校管理创新为手段、丰富办学内涵为主题、提高教学质量为目标，坚持“以办人民满意教育”为宗旨，坚持“以人为本”的办学理念，积极实施高中新课程改革，努力推进素质教育，认真抓好学校发展性督导评估工作和争创省一级重点中学各项工作的落实，努力提升办学水平，取得了可喜成绩，促进了学校的可持续发展。2004年，学校被舟山市教育局评为“舟山市中小学学校科技工作先进集体”、“舟山市中小学学校艺术工作先进集体”、“舟山市学生军训工作先进单位”;2005年，被省教育厅评为“浙江省中小学教育装备工作先进集体”， 被市教育局评为“舟山市高中段学校考核优秀单位”;2006年被省化学协会评为“省高中学生化学竞赛B组集体优胜学校”，被市政府评为“市级文明单位”、被市教育局评为“市学生军训工作先进单位”、“特色创建试点学校(英语教育)”、“市教育科研基地学校”、“省市陶研会实验学校”;2007年被省教育厅、省军区司令部联合评为“省学生军训工作先进单位”，被省教育厅评为“省级绿色学校”，被省档案局授予“学校档案管理目标省二级达标”、学校食堂被省卫生厅授予“省食品卫生等级A级单位”称号。

Shengsi Senior High School, founded in 1953, is located on a national tourist attraction-Shengsi Islands, off east cost, which enjoys a good reputation of Oriental Hawaii or Austral Beidai River. Attractively, the world-famous Yangshang Deep Water Port is built on the Islands. Covering an area of 61,192 square meters and a construction area of 27,180 square meters, the school, surrounded by waters and mountains, consists of 1043 students and 121 teachers and other staff. Rated as Key Scholl, Civilization Unit, Advanced Hygienic Unit, Green School as well as the Experimental School of Modern Technology in Zhengjiang Provine, Shengsi Senior High School is environmentally friendly, with a strong modern flavor.
